Building Emotional Stability, Confidence, & Resilience in Kids

When young people struggle with big feelings, changes at home or school, or the impact of trauma, having the right support can make all the difference. Kids Above All’s Counseling Solutions program provides therapy for children and adolescents in Cook, DuPage, Kane, and Lake counties, delivered by licensed clinicians trained in trauma‑informed, developmentally responsive care. Our approach centers on the whole child—not just symptoms—and aims to help young people build emotional skills, strengthen overall well‑being, and feel supported at home, in school, and in their communities.

Therapy can take place in person or virtually, depending on what works best for the child and their family. Our clinicians meet youth where they are emotionally, developmentally, and culturally, creating spaces where they feel secure and understood.

Why Therapy Matters for Youth

Children and teens experience life in ways that are uniquely tied to their developmental stage. A young child may express distress through behavior or play, while a teen may withdraw, act out, or feel overwhelmed by pressure. Early support can ease emotional struggles and prevent concerns from developing into more serious issues.

Common challenges that bring youth and families to therapy include:

  • Big emotions, frequent outbursts, or difficulty managing frustration
  • Anxiety, persistent worry, or avoidance of school or social situations
  • Sadness, lack of motivation, or social withdrawal
  • Bullying, friendship struggles, or social isolation
  • Concentration issues, impulsivity, or ADHD symptoms
  • Stress related to family changes, grief, or major transitions
  • Emotional or behavioral effects of trauma, violence, or instability

Whether a child is overwhelmed, shutting down, or having trouble keeping up in school or relationships, therapy can provide a structured space to understand what’s going on and learn healthier ways to manage their emotions.

How We Support Children & Teens

Kids Above All’s clinicians use a combination of developmentally appropriate, trauma‑informed, and evidence‑based approaches. Because no two children are alike, treatment is tailored to each young person’s age, needs, and unique strengths.

Therapeutic approaches include:

Art Therapy
Uses creative techniques such as drawing, painting, collage, and coloring to help children express themselves, examining the psychological and emotional undertones in their art.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
Helps youth identify unhelpful thoughts and develop healthier ways to cope with stress, anxiety, and emotional reactions.

Play Therapy
Allows children to express their feelings, process their experiences, and explore their challenges through play rather than solely words.

Trauma-Informed Therapies
Seek to address the mental health needs of youth impacted by trauma. These include the Attachment, Regulation & Competency (ARC) Model, Trauma-Informed CBT, Somatic Therapy, and experiential techniques such as Mindfulness, yoga, and creative writing.

What Therapy Builds In Young People

Kids Above All’s therapy services are designed to help children and teens:

  • Understand and manage difficult emotions
  • Strengthen coping strategies
  • Improve relationships with caregivers, siblings, teachers, and peers
  • Navigate school‑related stress or social challenges
  • Build confidence and a stronger sense of identity
  • Heal from traumatic or overwhelming experiences
  • Develop healthier communication and problem‑solving skills

These skills help youth feel more grounded and capable—whether they’re working through anxiety, recovering from trauma, coping with loss, or learning how to navigate changing expectations at home or school.
